Becoming a Hypnotherapist

Becoming certified as a hypnotist marks the beginning of a lifelong journey of greater and greater fulfillment because your life is changing in positive ways and the lives of those you help will also benefit greatly.

Devin Hastings Hypnosis Certification Instructor C. Devin Hastings has over 24 years experience using hypnosis and other methods to help people become happier and more successful. He is the author of two books, Control Your Diabetes with Hypnosis, and Anxiety, OCD and Hypnosis: New Answers for Those who Suffer in Silence. He is an award-winning Hypnotherapist and Fellow of The Association of Professional Hypnosis and Psychotherapy.

Certification

After taking the class, you are receiving a dual-certification. You are certified by the National Guild of Hypnotists as a Consulting Hypnotist and you are certified by the Minnesota Institute of Advanced Communications as a Master Hypnotist.

The National Guild of Hypnotists is the world's largest hypnosis organization and has a convention that is unmatched in quality and quantity of excellent and interesting seminars and workshops.

Course Outline

Qualifying Hours
The student will accomplish 75 hours in classroom and approximately 100 hours at home distance learning.

This 175 hours will more than qualify the student for membership in the National Guild of Hypnotists.

National Guild Hypnotists Certification Each student will be responsible for acquiring the necessary textbooks. You can get them at your local bookstore, or online at amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com. You may contact MIACS to order texts for a charge of $150. Contact devin@miacs.net. Each student will receive their exams and texts after enrollment and paying for their texts. They will then complete their exams at their own pace.

Students will submit these exams to the Minnesota Institute of Advanced Communication Skills for grading. Each successfully completed exam represents approximately 20 hours of distance learning.

General Program Objectives – Hypnosis Certification

The student is expected to have a basic through intermediate understanding of hypnosis and its consulting applications after their certification training.

It is expected that this initial training will prepare the student to begin working with clients for situations amenable to stress management consulting and motivational coaching.

This program meets and exceeds the criteria for membership in the National Guild of Hypnotists.

Specific program objectives consist of two major components:

Home study and classroom instruction.

In addition to the 5 books the student must study and pass exams for, they will also study National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH) approved manuals.

These manuals are the basis of the classroom instruction. NGH certification rests upon successful completion of NGH authorized examinations.

Home Study Component (100 hours study)
As mentioned above, prior to attending class, students are required to read, study and then successfully complete the exams for the following listed five texts. Students must correctly answer 70% of questions to pass each course.

Instructional Support for Self-Study Module
Instructors will be available for up to 2 hours of free support per student for assistance with the self-study module.

After 2 hours of support has been given, the student will be charged for instructor support at a rate of $75.00 per hour. Billing will be in 30 minute increments.

Contact between student and instructor can take place by phone or email.

If phone contact is desired, the student is urged to schedule at least one day in advance, a time to talk with an instructor. Email contact can take place at any time. Email response by the instructor will be logged in 5 minute increments.

Book tests will be sent to the student once full tuition has been paid in full.

Tests must be completed and returned to MIACS at least one week prior to class.

Students are free to contact each other for support during the self-study portion if they have each other’s contact information. Student contact information will not be supplied by MIACS to other students.

Home Study Components

  1. The New Hypnotherapy Handbook: Hypnosis and Mind/Body Healing By Kevin Hogan, Psy.D.

    Clock Hour Value of book study and exam: 22 hours

    The student must learn the basic structure of performing successful hypnosis with clients. The student will learn and be tested on the following:

    A thorough understanding of the model of the mind
    How to build a therapeutic alliance
    How to take an effective case analysis
    Basic parts work
    Time track hypnosis
    Direct suggestion use
    How to deal with unusual issues such as past life regression, false memory
    How to close your final session with a client

  2. The Art of Hypnotherapy by Roy Hunter, M.S., C.H.

    Clock Hour Value of book study and exam: 23 hours

    In this module, the student is continuing to learn the basic structure of performing successful hypnosis with clients. The student will learn and be tested on the following:

    The preinduction interview
    Allaying fears
    Building mental expectancy
    The benefits approach
    Hypnotic uncovering techniques
    Advanced parts work
    Peak performance hypnosis techniques

  3. Through The Open Door: Secrets of Self-Hypnosis by Kevin Hogan, Psy.D. and Mary Lee LaBay, M.A.

    Clock Hour Value of book study and exam: 20 hours

    This module covers several applications of hypnosis. The student will learn and be tested on the following:

    Overcoming procrastination
    High self-esteem and unshakable self-confidence
    Ten steps to weight loss
    Quitting smoking
    Pain relief with hypnosis (to be done only with a physician’s approval)
    Prosperity Consciousness
    Accelerated learning
    Memory Enhancement

  4. Hypnotherapy by Dave Elman

    Clock Hour Value of book study and exam: 18 hours

    This module covers more applications of hypnosis. The student will learn and be tested on the following:

    The handshake technique
    The Esdaile state
    Hypnosis in dentistry
    Hypnosis for stuttering
    Allergy relief with hypnosis

  5. Unlock Your Mind And Be Free! A Practical Approach To Hypnotherapy by Edgar A. Barnett, M.D.

    Clock Hour Value of book study and exam: 17 hours

    This module covers several advanced applications of hypnosis. The student will learn and be tested on the following:

    Hypnosis in the alleviation of:
    Fear
    Anger
    Sadness
    Guilt

Classroom Instruction Component

Tuition for Master Hypnotist Certification

Tuition for the Master Hypnotist certification training for 2009 will be $1495 although early registration will bring that fee down significantly. (Please see official website for all updated descriptions and course fees.)

For those who choose to enroll at least one month prior to the start of class, they will receive a $100.00 early registration discount.

Textbooks

Textbooks are available through the school or can be purchased by the student elsewhere. The student should budget about $150 for textbooks. Textbooks can be purchased through MIACS for an additional fee of $150 (contact devin@miacs.net) or at the student’s favorite bookstore.

Bonuses Included in Tuition Fee

NGH (National Guild of Hypnotists) manuals and audio material (valued at $150) are included in the tuition.

One year membership in the National Guild of Hypnotists (valued at $95.00) is also included the tuition.
