Understanding the Secret 'Law of Attraction'

Oh how I wanted to believe the "Law of Attraction" was "real." It was 1994 and I wrote, Life By Design, the only book I ever had to put 'out of print.' Too many of the principles and ideas in the book were like the "Law of Attraction" and as the evidence came in, it was obvious that my desire to believe was far greater than what was happening in the real world.

So, we deleted the book. It was frustrating. Being able to believe in the universe as something that we have a significant impact on through the quantum field was a pretty cool notion. And of course there was a lot more to it than that, but it was flat out incorrect.

It would be very easy to sell out and write persuasive pieces supporting 'The Secret' and get on Oprah.

It's an easy sale for Oprah's demographic.

I'd quintuple my income over night.

From a money-only perspective, I'm crazy not to do so.

But as much as I enjoy having a full wallet, a full heart is important, too. An honest character doesn't hurt any, either...so I have "attracted," (chosen) to be flat out direct about 'The Secret' and the "The Law of Attraction."

What's another 20 million....

If you want to skip ahead to the provocative stuff toward the middle of the article, I don't blame you. If you can handle a little bit of background....hang in there with me.

Creating and Attracting Success

I want success. You want success. However we define it.

I've spent 20 years creating a life and attracting the people I want into my life. I'm pretty happy with my results.

Now, notice I said, "creating" and "attracting." There is everything right and nothing wrong with attracting good into your life. There is everything right and nothing wrong with attracting good people into your life....even a car (though you do get a payment book with the car, so that one is a bit of a fairytale).

You and I both MUST do everything we can to create our best environment and world to live in. We should do everything we can to attract a safe and nurturing environment filled with gratitude. Without exception.

One thing I've been grateful for is the 8 year relationship I've had with readers of Coffee with Kevin Hogan. I've got one of the highest IQ demographics for readership on this planet. Coffee with Kevin Hogan readers all dress better and speak more articulately than I do. And that's who I attract. I don't attract idiots. They aren't interested. They go elsewhere and typically fail.

And I'll come back to "creating" and "attracting" shortly...

Next, because we all want some level of success, it's nice to have the proverbial road map as to HOW to "get there."

Damn, it took me awhile.

Almost six years to get Psychology of Persuasion published, a decade until I had a bestseller outside of this country. A lot of focus and work was involved. And I had help. Perhaps I attracted the success of The Psychology of Persuasion, perhaps I created it.

I successfully did therapy for 12 years (I could use 12 years of therapy, but I chose to help others instead). I still see a couple clients but not for long. I've fulfilled my destiny there. I'll be pleased when the few clients that remain refuse to see me any more! Perhaps I attracted the successful practice, perhaps I created it.

I've been inside the human mind in the most intimate setting anyone can enter. Therapist/client. One of total truth and surrender. Clients tell a good therapist the darkest and deepest secrets within the soul. You could never tell your spouse, your attorney or your accountant what you tell your therapist. It's a unique perspective. I'd say it's a gift, but frankly it's more of a responsibility. When you know just how fragile the human heart is, you don't like it when other people hurt still other people....

The other perspective that I bring to the table of success that many others don't is that I don't focus on words to say to convince people of things.

Predicting Success

Instead I look at how people make decisions, what causes people to come about what they believe, I look at what causes their behaviors, and then attempt to predict their behaviors based upon stimulii that enter into their environment whether from a person, what they wear, the location, the weather, you name it.

If I successfully predict what people will do then in all probability, I begin to understand the "why's." It's not a guarantee of knowing what someone will do...but that's another story as well.

My own personal experience of happiness and sadness, love and hate, anger and joy are of little concern. I prefer to be happy, in love and feeling joyful but that isn't always the case, and, that is life and that is OK.

More important than making myself feel good is DOING THE RIGHT THING. I don't know whether I attracted the belief or created it. Or maybe they are both the same...

And I don't always succeed at that either, but I try like hell.

Those are my "doors to success...." ....And there are other people who have different doors into the study of success. I'm familiar with most, but an expert at only a few.
