Q & A

with Kevin Hogan, Psy.D.

Do YOU have a question? E-mail askkevin AT kevinhogan.com

THIS WEEK'S QUESTION(S):

Q. You have an NLP Home Study Course for sale but you come down pretty hard on "NLP" as a discipline. Can you explain this inconsistency?

A. The NLP Home Study Course was taped about 7 years ago, as I recall. It's a great little set but we don't actively promote it for a lot of reasons. It was my last Master Practitioner training I did with Devin Hastings and the way we created the course was pulling all the stuff that actually works in NLP and putting it into a training and eventually, this set.

NLP does have some cool stuff that is useful in the real world and it has a ton of stuff that is simply impotent. If NLP were a discipline, a field of study where research was regularly done to grow the "field," then this would all change, of course, and you'd evolve a field with potential. As NLP became largely standardized and "presuppositions" became commandments, I became uninterested and pursued persuasion technologies that worked in the real world, information that could be challenged, tested, refined, and adapted to business and relationships.

Q. I'm interested in attracting a girl into my life and I hear you may write about seduction in 2 years. This is much too long for me to wait. I don't have a good idea what to use on women that have men asking them out all the time. Would you tell me the core principles of seduction so I have a framework for discovering the strategies and how to apply them from the Science of Influence series?

A. All things being equal, you want to stand out from the crowd. Uniqueness pays off in both business and personal relationships. Be fearless. Women are "there" (wherever, church, the bar) because they don't want to be at home, they want to be there. So approachability isn't an issue. And if someone does have an issue, carry a business card of a psychologist for them perhaps... :-)

Seriously, approach, say hello. Allow awkwardness to be OK, allow failure to be OK, prepare to hear no, come bearing gifts perhaps...as for a serious framework, that's going to require more than I can do in Coffee.

Q. How do I attract and retain a $10 an hour employee?

A. Wow. Interesting question. I'm not sure how you attract one. Classified Ads I guess. Retain a TEN dollar an hour employee. Be damn nice to the person and treat them like gold...

Q. How do you get people who have been conditioned to take "inaction" to do something?

A. Repetitive actions over and over until action overtakes inaction as standard programming in the brain. Lifestorms is a good program to learn more, so is Three Disciplines and Time for Love, Time for Money.
