The Secret...The Truth Behind the Lie

by Kevin Hogan

Page 4

Ah...and then we go to dinner with the "Law of Attractioners"...perhaps in Hollywood where the book is selling very well indeed...where people believe and receive....

They order dinner but it never comes because the kids in the back are all manifesting away...believing that they will not need to work tonight and will certainly have the money on the table in the morning...and will have no need to do something as hard as save for college....the school work doesn't need to be studied because attracting $10,000 is as easy as $1 and they apply the simple law to their homework.

Except... they fail the test. They end up on the street because they believed a little too much and did a little too little...

...and no dinner was served.

...but it doesn't matter...it wasn't meant to be...irritated, the Attractioners depart and are happy to hop in the limo and go home to a delightful gourmet dinner that they attracted last week, cooked because they thought it (and because Jose cooked it.)

...they fall asleep thankful...being blessed that they believed...in the "Law of Attraction" and knowing that for the billions of others they taught, it simply wasn't meant to be. Those that starve, that die of dyssentery...it doesn't matter because it was their destiny. All is as it is supposed to be as they turn over and fall asleep...as they have an afternoon taping of the next TV show where they will go and harm and permanently scar another million lives with the belief in the magical "Law of Attraction"......................

================================================================

If there is anyone you know that has the ability to heal cancer, cool global warming, attract profound wealth (or even a little) with only their mind, please feel free to NOT write, YET, but better, please help them find their way to the local Children's Hospital. Please don't tell anyone why the visit... Simply heal the kids that are dying and attract in money for the medical bills given to the parents for those who are not.

THEN please do write and let me know about the multiple healings the person has performed and where they will be tomorrow, for I will be there too, to observe and report back to the world, to CNN and ABC and FOX and the BBC....

Read the NEWSWEEK story on 'The Secret': Newsweek: Decoding the Secret (This article will open in a new window.)

Unsolicited Comments:

"Thank you Kevin, As the mother of a 37 year old severely disabled daughter I have even had Gypsies curse me for not giving them money to cure my daughter. Hokum Pokum does nothing for the world. Perhaps these people can attract back all the bees that have suddenly just gone from the US overnight – or do they know more than we do. Let’s not forget the crabs that are dying in their thousands on the US beaches. Perhaps the Law of Attraction is attracting something quite different from what they expect. These people are charlatans of the worst order and it takes a big man to expose them in this way."

"Kevin, this needed to be said. There will be more out soon that eviscerates What the Bleep to it's raw fraudli-hood. The Secret is just as dangerous in my opinion."

"I just wanted to respond to your piece and its depiction of people in poverty and dreadful circumstance as completely powerless. We are not flaky ‘new agers’ who naively think that God is a slot machine. Of course there is natural law, gravity is something that affects us all and merely thinking ‘I can fly’ won’t stop us splatting on the pavement below if we jump from high enough to test it (we haven’t yet met any Masters to prove differently, except in myths and legends, although, having said that, it’s very interesting how some people will survive against incredible odds – cf many accounts in ‘Fortean Times’ whilst others just bang their heads and drop dead on the spot!). However, many people experience devastating circumstances and STILL bounce back, or make the choice to focus on achieving their vision no matter what. The ‘Miracle Man’ in ‘The Secret’ DVD is a classic case of this. I’ve had numerous clients over the past 30 years who’ve made amazing recoveries from conditions that were supposedly untreatable, people who are still alive and enjoying a good quality of life who were written off long ago by the medical profession. (edited for privacy)...I have experienced ‘miracles’ of both the small kind and some more dramatic ones, throughout our lives. We work with evidence-based research but we also find that many things are still outwith the ability of biomedicine or the current scientific paradigm to explain. But this doesn’t mean they aren’t real, it means we can’t yet explain them. And as the power of the creative imagination and the ‘human spirit’ is what we are working with in our hypnotherapy and personal development work, with ourselves and others, we don’t find ‘The Secret’ to be offensive in the way you clearly do. And this just doesn’t seem to ‘fit’ with much of what’s in your published work! (edited for privacy) didn’t hear anyone in ‘The Secret’ saying that all we have to do is think positive or that we don’t need to take any action whatsoever. Vision/attraction plus work, yes, it’s just that sometimes there isn’t much that can be done on the outside, but the mental rehearsal means we can manifest results so much more easily when we get the chance if we’ve first laid down the neural pathways in our mind-body. Although we don’t ‘know’ that there is an actual ‘Law of Attraction’ – as so often with metaphysical arguments there isn’t any hard-and-fast proof – but what we do know is that people (from every society and walk of life) who consistently focus on the results that they want to achieve and take whatever relevant action they can to manifest them, tend to achieve, and often exceed, their goals, even when these seem impossible, no matter. (edited for length)."

"Hey Kevin, I read your post about The Secret and could not agree more. At first I thought it was funny because it is just so silly, but then when I noticed the over abundance of folks who actually believed this stuff it got me worried. As you explained, there is no “Secret”. It is all basic psychology that most college freshmen learn in psych 101. It goes back to Hans the horse and the Pygmalion effect – nothing new. Certainly no need for esoteric vehicles – there are 3 syllables that pretty refute the whole “Law” of attraction. And those syllables are “Las Vegas”. No matter how hard you think, visualize, and clear your baggage – you aren’t going to win at blackjack in Vegas over the long term. You could, however, learn how to count cards and do quite well (for as long as they let you!) Anyway, good stuff."

"Kevin, I saw your article about "The Secret". I got the link through BlairWarren.com. Though I understand exactly where you are coming from, I didn't quite take such a negative twist on it in regards to the issue of money-making. The Secret states nothing more than "there is enough." African societies, long ago, believed this, until their invasion and devastation by European nations and beliefs. Now, it will take another 1000 years to get them back to where they were, as a continent, 1000 years ago. My Mother is of Native American (Cherokee/Blackfeet) bloodlines, my father of African bloodlines. Trust me; I get your example and do understand it, even from your point of view. Nevertheless, I neither paid a great deal to watch the show and even use it with my students. I have learned on thing, Kevin...it's not magic. It's certainly not magic -- in the sense of "sisboombah, bingbangboom, it's done!" It is more like the Universe being a big copy machine. If you put enough thought energy toward a particular choice, you'll ultimately get back what you've asked for. In three dimensions, thought takes time to form, so one has to continue thinking that same way and be extraordinarily pervasive with the thought. That is the only way the Universe gives up its gifts, at least in the 3rd dimension, where we reside, physically. Anyway, I understand your concern, but am trying to be more objective (no one can be entirely objective, as you know). I like to read detractors as well as support for something. Be Well and Go Carefully, Kevin."

"Dear Kevin, At last, somebody exposing the destructive side of "the secret." Thanks. Over here in the UK, a game show host was seen to have some diagrams (moon, star, etc.) drawn on his hand. He explained that the diagrams were related to his use of "cosmic ordering" to wish for a comeback and it happened automatically--kind of like cosmic room service. The media grabbed hold of it, he quickly wrote a book, and of course it became a best seller..."

"What is this S*!IT? Sending out this babble is just a waste of people's time and you should STOP IT immediately. It just pisses me off that people think that anyone wants to read such nonsense. Get a f*%@ing grip!"

"Hi Kevin, It's been almost 10 years that I have been watching your outstanding work offline and online. I just wanted to thank you for the very objective and revealing message you wrote about "The Secret... The Truth behind the Lie" It was very courageous of you to come accross with your point of view though it was a drastic re-definition of the Secret. Your article somehow reminded me a Gary Halbert quote about "meditation"... It said: "Motion Beats Meditation" Kevin keep up the good work."

"Please remove me from your email list. I am so appalled at your extremely negative and demonizing take on The Secret, which I have been using with amazing results for many years, that I don't want to read it anymore. Either you haven't really tried it, or you can't get your negative thinking out of the way to align with what you want in your life. Believe me, it works - all you need to do it try it."

"Kevin, What a powerful article you wrote on the Law of Attraction. Wow!"

"Merci Kevin...I have added your article with minimum change except "bold" type... here: [Link Deleted] Yes indeed you are at the epicenter of an online earthquake...It was about time to tell the truth. I think people (we sometimes) are deluded by their own self delusion ... It was about time to "ring the bell" and say: "wake up":-) as the majority of Earth Citizens come into the 21st century "badly equipped"...with some major challenges in a world already in crisis at all levels... Kevin keep up the good work"

"Wow! You gotta be kidding right? This is a joke you are playing, correct? You don't really believe all this gibberish you posted do you? You need to do yourself a favor and quickly start buying and reading the Conversatios With God books! Fast! Although the Bible is nothing more than a storybook, full of stories, written by storytellers, there is some Truth planted in it even though it is misinterpreted unknowingly or on purpose. And one of those truths is the fact that we are creative beings, able to create anything according and in alignment with our beliefs about it. You need a shrink in a big way, if you really meant all that you talked about and chastising the author of the Secret and others."

"Kevin, I am sure your comments will generate a lot of comments from those who love "the secret". Let me tell you my contact with "The Secret". My wife and I are both fairly strong Christians who over the years, just couldn't put the pieces together. Nor were we on the "same page". I got the secret last week and we watched it with our "filter"and found that most of it agreed with the Judeo/Christian teachings. I must say it helped us focus our energy, we wrote our common goals, dreams and developed a vision board. We are closer now and we communicate like when we were young. (wish there was more "action" with the talk) Like you, I knew there were some ideas in the video that are not possible in our current world. Can anyone see Bin Laden watching this? Thank you for your input on balancing "The Secret" effect."

"Hi Kevin, (edited for privacy) ..my friend..Well he's actually IN the Secret and has expressed a very similar concern about the heavy emphasis on the "magical thinking aspect" ...Just send it out to the universe and that's all you need to do. End of story. He regrets that it underemphasizes that you must believe AND also take action... and the action you take HAS to be of proportionate value to other people. But unfortunately, his view seems to be in the minority... I think he would appreciate your article. I'm forwarding it to him. All the Best"

"Hi Kevin, Hope this finds you having an amazing day!!! (edited for privacy) I am a subscriber to "Coffee". The statements you made about The Secret I found disturbing. It really isn't that you just sit around and think. Action must be taken. I was very surprised at your take on it. Thanks for reading this email."

"Hi, Kevin, You seem to be even more p*ssed off with 'The Secret' than I am! Rhonda Byrne's "scary non-reality" is certainly a bit of a pain in the proverbial for me right now - mostly for a different and rather complicated personal reason - but I agree with everything you say about it generally. You're so right about those 'Secret Teachers'. I'm told QQQQ QQQQQ is charging more than $3,000 a ticket for his 'Law of Attraction' seminars. XXXX XXXXX - I know he's a friend of yours and he's a great guy, defintely is, but I reckon he's really been allowing his imagination to gallop off ahead of the facts. He wrote in his blog recently about how he'd "attracted" some very expensive car into his possession (as if "Oh, and you can do this, too"), and I'm reading that and thinking, "Come off it, XXXXXX. You're a fricking multimillionaire. You thought of buying the car and you went down to the showroom and bought it." Give me a break, as the saying goes. Another time, I was listening to an mp3 interview between one of the other 'Secret Teachers' and the guy whose work apparently introduced him to the concept of 'The Law of Attraction' (or more accurately to the Abraham-Hicks perception of reality) and they were talking about quantum physics - it was painfully obvious that even though they're teaching this stuff to other people as if they're experts, they seriously *do not understand* what they're talking about. Truly awful. Last year, I went through months of exchanging views at The Secret's online forum with various members of the Abraham-Hicks Fan Club and the more they tried to explain 'The Law of Attraction' to me, the less sense it made. Eventually, they decided to just ignore my questions. Anyway, thank you for answering my question and for your article. Is that perceptual filtering thing called the Attraction Principle? I didn't know that. I was hoping to stay away from the magnetism metaphor. Perhaps I could be a total maverick and call it the Selection Principle instead. It's something like that, isn't it? 'The Secret' is an ongoing topic of interest in my newsletter at the moment, so I'll be sure to link to your article in the next issue. As it happens, 'The Secret' also got a mention in James Randi's newsletter this week - one of his readers sent him a copy of the DVD. Mr. Randi has promised a review of the movie in the near future. It should make very interesting reading. Thanks again for your help. I appreciate it. Have a truly excellent day!"
