The Secret...The Truth Behind the Lie

The new book, The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne is an encapsulization of a recurring wish for magic, to be real.

Shoot, everyone wants to be able to play Quidditch. We all have hoped for potions and spells to be effective at rendering a teacher or professor silent for a day...we all want to be able to fight off evil dementors...

It's the simple notion that you can blink your eyes or wiggle your nose and that which you desire will appear....that Santa Claus really will come down the chimney...(and if anyone wanted to believe that...it would be me) ...the simple notion that these things are real is where things start to get unsettling...and for most people on this planet, offensive.

And I should be precise. The philosophy is not about Santa Claus or wiggling your nose. Specifically I am most concerned about an ideology that comes from higher beings in the universe channelled through a human who then teaches it to a bunch of people as a "law of the universe" like gravity.

This article refers specifically to Byrne's contribution to her own book. Some of the contributors gave useful content (Denis Waitley for example). But Ms. Byrne is living in a disconcerting non-reality.

The Magical "Law of Attraction"

(I can't measure spirit beings channeling info to people.)

"Attract a feather...it will come."

Not if there's no birds on your island it won't....

Unfortunately, there is either an unkind lie or a big mistake happening.

*Obviously* if you live in a free country you can control much of your destiny IF you are physically able and in reasonably OK above the neck....and attributing your level of success to the law of attraction or God or your kids is fine. BUT, when you take that attribution and bring it to people who don't live in the richest nation(s) on earth we painfully see that the "law" doesn't apply....

But here's the thing:

God is *not* a slot machine.

And that is a fairly profound statement.

He doesn't withhold the money from the people of the African continent because they are unable to "believe enough", nor does he bless the Americans (or Australians) because they believe so much better.

The "Law of Attraction" as it is presented in metaphysical literature like The Secret is indeed an untruth and a mistake.

So, if I tell you to be aware (or not be aware) of the number 23 this week, I promise you will notice it....far more often than you will have dreamed possible. 23.

If you say that you want to earn $100,000 next year on the internet, it's pretty easy to make that happen. The Attraction Principle goes to work in the brain.

The importance of the Attraction Principle is that our primed awareness IS relevant to our achievement and success in life. In fact, it's paramount to both.

However, it is by no means a law.

I only could wish that were true....
