How to Ask Great Questions, Part 1
...in Light of Magic, Persuasion and Memes

by Kevin Hogan

What are some of the Silent Elements of Persuasion?

  • The place (location) you are.

  • The behavior of others and your unconscious replication of those behaviors without thought (pacing & leading).

  • The sequence of information presentation.

  • Space and proxemics and how you use that space.
Silent persuasion is powerful.

Part of silent persuasion comes in the form of "memes."

A "meme" is an idea that is experienced in one person's head that is "virally transmitted" to another person's mind. Think "gene" but at the level of mind...

How Do Memes Spread?

Memes can "spread" with or without intention and they can spread with or without communication.

Memes can spread with observation.

Ben argued that memes can spread with entrainment (the synchronization of two or more rhythmic cycles). This is an idea I hadn't given thought to, and I had to agree - in some situations. (Nuns in a convent often experience their monthly cycle at the same time, for example.)

For memetics and persuasion, we can hold off on that for a different day. Fascinating, though.

Spreading our Message Through Asking the Proper Questions

The message for today is the incredible power of questions. Simple and intentional...powerful. A question can offend and annoy. A question can interrogate and cause pain. A question can cause interruption of current thought patterns and lay out new possibilities. A question can flatter and ingratiate.

Jeffrey Gitomer once asked me, "What's selling...in two words?"

His answer: Ask questions.

And when you do, think about the state of the person whom you are asking.

Think about the fears, the desires, the context, the motivations; the place where the person is at emotionally.

Read on for a scenario brought to me this week by a client, that shows the magic(k) of asking the right questions.
