How to Ask Great Questions, Part 1
...in Light of Magic, Persuasion and Memes

by Kevin Hogan

I am communicating without words. I am causing a specific behavior to be observed by every single person, without asking it to be observed... and every single person does so...even the noncompliant ones like me.... There is no verbal command. I don't point. That's as covert as you can get...

Now, before we get back to our formula for asking great questions...let's introduce the meme.

What I was doing with the distraction in the sleight of hand magic was harnessing the power of a Meme. I caused everyone to perform the exact behavior that one person was doing. That's as good as it gets.

(A meme is an idea, thought or "behavior" that is spread from mind to mind... a thought virus.)

One person looks and immediately everyone else does. It's an instantly spreading covert mind virus. And the virus MUST spread or the illusion is that Kevin gets caught lifting the clanky sounding plate (and it does clank loudly at times) and there would be no illusion today....

So, is persuasion/marketing the face of "magic"?

In a sense, yes. Magic often requires deception. Persuasion should not require deception. Persuasion doesn't require deception, though it should almost ALWAYS require distraction.

Thus my answer. The question was brilliant.

Ritual and Persuasion

Then Ben asked, "and what if we add a K and make magic, magick?"

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....

"Now that really IS interesting."

Ben interrupts another pattern of thought and throws me into the world of ritual magick. Harry Potter magick...if you will... Rituals, incantations, spells, potions...

Now I have to think what Ben is asking...

Is he asking me if persuasion/marketing is the face of spell casting and causing things to happen in some quantum world because of ritual...or causing behavioral changes with rituals and spells?

I don't ask.

Is he asking me to use magick as a metaphor of what persuasion and marketing "are?"

To the person involved in magick, magick is about directing thinking in my mind to get someone else to go where I want them to go or think what I want them to think. And if a magickian could actually do that, then of course persuasion and magick are cousins. But I'm not there yet....

Or, is Ben literally saying, that persuasion/marketing is magick?

The ambiguity is becoming risky for a radio show but no matter. It's going to stir fascinating conversation....and it's going to provide great insight into what makes a great question in selling and marketing and why...
