Failure (Part One)by Kevin HoganThe holidays, which are indeed important, will become overwhelming if you haven't got your new Life Plan into place and soon. In fact lack of plan now will likely diminish the chances you have of restoring your 401K, not losing the place where you live and on and on. The time to begin, the time to begin building momentum in your life, is now...right now... Part of life is leisure, but a good part of life is work of some kind, and that is real life. Today though... thoughts sparked from the world of entertainment.... One of the surprising gifts we all have is, believe it or not, the ability to watch "reality tv." I don't get to watch much TV but I do have things I like to watch regularly. I watch television for one reason: to be entertained. But that entertainment can dovetail with other desires, interests and needs. One is to understand and observe human behavior. I was watching Survivor last week and the "immunity challenge" was to get a fire going with flint and shavings....and get it to burn high enough to burn through a rope. Link to video of Survivor Episode: Watch Survivior Episode 9 (Note: Challenge appears at the 24:30 mark in the video.) 16 contestants are given a shot in this 39-day game. The prize is a million dollars for the winner. $100,000 for second place. For everyone else, a lot of TV time that many have leveraged. So you're playing a game where you have a 1/16 chance at winning $1,000,000. That's pretty cool. And the game is designed much like life with a few more edges and cliffs built in. But human behavior is indeed human behavior.... Of the 16, 9 remained in the game on last week's episode. The odds get better with each passing day!
This, to me, of course is insane. A 12.5% chance at acquiring a million dollars two weeks from today....wow...I shake my head at how people could give up so fast. And a couple quit prior to anyone else succeeding at all! And ultimately 3 people simply gave up and watched the other five. It was sadly funny. ...people in the moment often don't think (or don't ever think). Nonconscious reaction to failing after only 5 minutes when given a guaranteed 1/8 chance at winning a million bucks and 3 people just quit. Wild. I'm not used to such abject stupidity so clearly playing out so quickly right before my eyes. I'm wondering how many people are watching and thinking what I'm thinking...or are they *only* being entertained.... And this is one of a few reasons why I like this show...if you could get the world to watch, people would realize just how amazingly foolish our behavior is as humans.
