Q: What is the fastest way to get a lot of money?

A. Depends on your risk level. If you are willing to take a huge risk and put all of your money on #18 on the roulette wheel, you have one chance in 37 of multiplying your net worth by 35. If you do this, you are an idiot because you are giving up your life for a 3% chance of winning.

The exact opposite is true as well. Put your money in the bank and get the guaranteed return, and you will go broke as inflation will chew you up.

You must find projects that have a high expected outcome. Starting your own business is an inexpensive way to make a great deal of money. In most service businesses, you can start making money today. If you want to sell a product, it will take longer.

Q: What did you do right? What did you do wrong?

A. I did far more things poorly than I have well. I accepted a book deal immediately after Psychology of Persuasioncame out. Had I not been doggedly promoting Persuasion it may have gone the way of 98% of all books. I should have maintained focus on the book and turned the new project down.

Alliance with a business partner who produces 1/2 as much as you is devastating when you split profits 50/50.

Those are the kind of errors I've made in the past.

I did some things right. I never anticipated a return today or even this year. I kept persisting on projects that were like seeds that needed fertilizer, watering and lots of sun to sprout. Do that to a lot of seeds that you can manage and you win.

Q: Why don't the "get rich quick programs" work?

A. Because you can't get rich quick. What will you do? Put a product up on the internet. Make it number one in the search engines immediately. Thousands buy it in the morning and you are rich by nightfall. Sounds enticing. What would you pay for the details? Don't. You think that works? OK fine. Give it a shot. Like the Magic 8 Ball "said," Ask again later.

You can become wealthy in reasonably short amounts of time. Smart and tenacious effort with a great map and a little help from your friends.

Q: What is the difference between the Millionaire Mind/Psychology of Wealth Accumulation and everything else out there?

A. The market currently offers basically two type of programs. The first are the philosophy programs. They offer lots of good philosophy and no tangible information that is proven to work.

The other programs offer some tangible information that worked for THEM. They tell you that it will work for you but in all likelihood, it won't.

I wanted to solve these two problems and the result was the two programs you mentioned.

Q: My question is...How are your home study courses (Psychology of Wealth Accumulation/MillionaireMind) different from the Law of Attraction? The teachings of the Law of Attraction states that you'll attract to your life whatever you give your attention, energy and focus to, whether wanted or unwanted - emphasis on the unwanted. The vibes that you put out (also called vibrations) are either negative vibes or positive vibes, and at every moment, the Law of Attraction is responding to the vibes you are offering by giving you more of the same, whether wanted or unwanted. This seems to make since but I am still not having any luck with being more successful.

A. The Law of Attraction, as you accurately describe above, is a lot of nonsense. There is no spin on subatomic particles that is caused by "negative" and "positive" feelings. Not only that, your answer is within your question.

It doesn't prove to be true in experience. (If it did, every airplane would crash from the fear generated by the mental images in the 60% of people who are nervous flying.)

I would address the point more, but the Law of Attraction doesn't "work" for anyone. It can't. Everyone would think: Send money. Millions. Their mailboxes would open, the money would appear. Inflation would skyrocket to all time insanity and the money would be completely worthless.

50,000,000 men would all think: Pam Anderson. Reality: she's only going to one address, and it isn't on your block.

The Psychology of Wealth Accumulation and The Millionaire Mind are programs that I developed based upon personal experience, experience of wealthy colleagues and friends and a data analysis of wealthy people. Both programs deal with the elements that are missing in every other wealth building program: The unconscious mind. The programs reveal how to adopt certain beliefs...what beliefs they need to be...and most importantly unhooking every single unconscious reaction that could cause self sabotage on the route to wealth.

The two programs you mention are astonishingly effective because they both reverse engineer and engineer wealth without flaw.

Q: I heard you speak in Las Vegas at a conference. Do you know where I can find some good stories and or metaphors that are pre written that can be used in any of the following areas: Sales and Marketing, Persuasion and influence, More rapport with women, a story that gave you authority etc. Please let me know if there are any good books, tapes or other products that would help me to learn more about sales, marketing, influence etc. especially from a symbolic modeling and metaphor as well as clean language or NLP point of view.

A: Prewritten metaphors and stories are a waste of time for you and your clients. They cannot possibly be optimal for you as they were written by someone else for someone else. Metaphors and stories need to be contextually relevant. That includes the current environment, the other person's history, beliefs, attitudes, drives and desires. No book can give you a script for the people you encounter.

There is no question that The Science of Influence (Volumes 1-30) and Covert Hypnosis (which includes a POWERFUL story-telling module) are the finest programs available to help you.

Q: How do people gather courage and conviction?

A. My first response was with a basket, but let's not go there. Conviction comes with certainty from seeing and reinforcing attitudes. Conviction is unyielding certainty that comes from a fundamentalist viewpoint on whatever it is you want to be convicted of. Courage is different. Being certain and telling someone that are different things. Courage comes from plenty of experiences in being courageous. Some of those can be internally generated. Many will need to be externally experienced.

Q: How can I reduce or deactivate the feeling of rejection?

A. You can't deactivate the pain of rejection. Rejection is felt the same way a heart attack or a knife in the back is experienced. It literally hurts. By preparing for the experience you can desensitize some of the pain that is coming. Unfortunately rehearsal for rejection could bring it on when perhaps it wasn't coming! Rejection is painful as any sales person or jilted lover will tell you. Inside we are all the five year old child who wants attention and affection. When someone refuses you, turns you away, and won't engage you, you feel the pain and if you didn't you would be on your way to psychopathology or sociopathology.

Q: My question is... have you ever had any experience dealing with intrusive tinnitus caused by an Accoustic Neuroma.... where the person has lost most hearing in the affected ear. I have tried TRT but because I lost hearing I had to give up after 18 months into it. I was working with Dr Nagler in Atlanta. Tinnitus level estimated there at 80 DCB.

A: Certainly. If you still have hearing in that ear you are among the few. Contact me via email, happy to help.

Q: In Science of Influence 27/28 you talk about how people back out of contributing to their own retirement or won't do it unless they OK it with their company many months in advance. Why?

A. People perceive the investment in their retirement as an expense, it comes "out" of their paycheck...that's the perception. Obviously this is the only money the individual will ever have but it isn't experienced that way. Therefore, it is seen the same way a charitable contribution is ... and that is why people retire broke.

Q: I was just wondering can you get hepatitis c from having sex with some one who has it? and my other questions is if I have been treated for gonorrhea and then found out a year later that I have hpv can i still have kids? Thanks for your time if you don't know the answer can you please send me the link to some one I can ask?

A. You certainly could get Hepatitis C from having sex with someone who has it. Condom use will dramatically reduce those chances. Can you have kids? Talk with your M.D. about that one. Of course you COULD, the question is ethical not technical. My best...

Q: What's the fastest way to become a millionaire?

Doing something you believe in with all of your heart so you wake up in the morning and go about your business like you do when you go to the grocery store. Becoming a millionaire isn't that complex. Well defined plan x Time x Focused Work x Constant Adjustment x Coordinated Effort x Knowledge x Unyielding disposition. Start today you can be a million dollars wealthier in 7 years. When someone tells you that you can make a million this year and you don't yet make 100K, pass them by. Forget the get rich quick plans. 95% are scams. Instead: Get rich fairly quickly and do it right, ethically, with love and for the right reasons. Money is not hard to accumulate. Collect it like dust.

If you want a good risk to reward ratio and you have little to start with you can consider unconventional real estate strategies. If you have a lot of assets, you might not want to go this route as the downside can be significant.

Another good risk to reward ratio, probably the best is to be in business for yourself. In fact, data shows that the best way to become a millionaire in the shortest period of time is to go into business for yourself.

Q: How can you tell if someone is lying?

A lot of experience...a lot of knowledge. Sometimes it's not easy at all for anyone.

Some people lie so well that you have a very difficult time distinguishing between what truth they are telling you and what they are not.Other people give you information that they believe to be true when in reality it is not. If someone is lying and they know it you can begin to determine this by changes in their nonverbal behavior when contrasted with when they were telling the truth. Blood flows to the nose and earlobes when you are under great pressure and often when experiencing feelings of deception. Blood flow to a location usually changes sensation in that part of the body. In the case of nose or earlobes: An itch. Look for leakage in feet and hands. There are lots and lots of clues...but be careful to make the accusation until you are dead certain.....most people are VERY POOR at judging someone else's honesty. In fact, most people cannot read body language and interpret others body language as successfully as flipping a coin.

Q: In your book (Irresistible Attraction: Secrets of Personal Magnetism) you say that people should lose weight. I think that people should be comfortable with their weight and stop the eating disorders that we have running rampant....

Eating disorders aren't running rampant. For every person with bulimia or anorexia there are 50 that are obese. Obesity causes cancer, diabetes and well...death. If you are overweight, re-establish a new body image outcome. Start 10 pounds lighter than you are and move along until you can stand to look at yourself in the mirror. Fact: Most people in the United States have SERIOUS problems with weight to the point it is mortally relevant. Do not allow yourself to be comfortable with a weight that will yield diabetes or cancer. You don't want that stuff.

Q: Why can't I get motivated to market my practice?

Look here first. Then check The Psychology of Wealth Accumulation out.

  1. Self-sabotage
  2. Fear of success
  3. Fear of failure
  4. Conflicting beliefs
  5. Conflicting values
  6. No reason to do so
  7. People will benefit aside from you, that you do not like

Q: Can hypnosis help someone with obstructive sleep apnea?

Anything is possible but my best guess is: Probably not. Sorry.

Q: I have a fear of flying. Can hypnosis help?

Almost certainly with the right approach. Most likely over a number of sessions and actually taking some flights.

Q: Can hypnosis really help you have better sex?

You ever meet an expert in hypnosis without a seriously overstimulated libido? Good sex is all about trance and powerful associated states.

Q: What is your favorite movie?

Are you kidding? It's a Wonderful Life. Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed. 1946. Isn't it everyone's?

Q: Who will be the democratic nominee for President?

KH: The only democrat that has a chance to beat Bush in 2004 is Senator Clinton. Howard Dean will probably win early primaries but once people start to see who he is and how nuts this guy is...he will fade fast. Clinton seems unlikely to run this year, probably a shoe-in for 08. Therefore you have to look to the candidates who are believable and sensible. That's Kerry and Lieberman. Combined, they have a total of one personality. But, the two of them on a ticket could win the traditionally democratic states. Gephardt does nothing for the ticket. So, assuming the democrat does the logical thing...which is a stretch, I'm going to say the Presidential nominee will be Kerry with Lieberman the VP nominee. As of this writing, it would be almost impossible for Bush to lose the 04 vote. He probably has a solid 55% of the voters and I can't see anything dramatically changing that in the course of the year. If I were laying odds- I'd say Bush is at least a 2:1 favorite for the election.

Q: How can I get women that are "out of my class?"

KH: Getting a single date isn't that difficult in any class, but let's talk about the relationship. This depends on what you mean by class. Is she a 9/10 in attractiveness? If so, you need potential resources (money, education, "prospects") for a real shot. If she is in the 9/10 income group you'll have to meet that income and have a LOT of prospects. If she's paired the 9/9 or 10/10 it's going to be tough.

Now, bringing the challenge to more realistic levels, if you can get an introduction to most women, you have an excellent chance based on the introduction and common threads of interest. An introduction buys you credibliity that is tough to build instantly on your own. Borrow your mutual friends credibility and do something with her that is stimulating however and whatever that means to her. If you like it, it will show and your new bond should drive you while you begin to show her who you are. In general a woman will not marry a man who earns less than she does. This is typically (75%) true in women who earn 40,000 per year or less. This is almost always true in women who earn over 75,000 per year. (99%) Similarly a woman's physical attractiveness will need to match your potential value as an all around "catch." In other words, if you aren't all that great looking, you can rely on your current or future probable resources. If you have no resources, your extended education and knowledge base will help. If you have none of these...it's time to get to work.

Q: I've bought over 20 people's tape programs on success and have gotten nowhere... Very disenchanted...What do I do?

KH: You hire 20 philosophy coaches, you are likely to lose. Find someone who you can model through their work, that you know has been through the challenges you currently face who has gone on to acheive. Listen to the programs to find the steps they took and then plan to make similar steps. If the speaker doesn't give you step by step plans then you have little to go on. Maintain high integrity and honesty. Only work under the shadow of someone who you would trust with your kids...or your wife.

Q: How do you treat hyperacusis?

KH: Almost identically to tinnitus. Appropriate therapy should dramatically reduce hyperacusis in less than one year.

Q: Why don't focus groups work?

KH: People are telling you why they like something or whether they will buy something or not. Humans are not able to tell you why they did something or like something. Nor are they able to predict whether they will truly buy something or not. All evidence shows that focus groups are utter failures and that people's ability to identify "why" and "predict" whether they will buy something is a waste of time.

Someone once said to me, "Everyone loves this book idea and they say they will buy it." That means absolutely zero. Nothing. Nada.

Q: Will you be doing an NLP training?

KH: In Seattle in May. Probably the last one ever. I'm going to videotape this training to put the complete master's program together then put the program in the store. It will be the most useful material ever put on DVD.

Q: What is your speaker fee?

KH: $12500 Keynote plus expenses. Slight variability if there is no opportunity for sharing programs I've developed with the audience.

Q: How is hypnotherapy like selling products and services?

KH: All human interactions are persuasive interactions. In therapy you simply have a different kind of outcome. The processes are often similar and the same thing that makes a successful therapist running her own business makes a successful salesperson.

Q: What is the most important aspect of being a successful salesperson?

KH: A successful salesperson has a synthesis of knowledge, experience, and abilities. If I were pressed to choose the most important element, I would say number one is the ability to Manage Your State of Mind in All Situations. Your state of mind is one element you have a great deal of control over. When you are in control of your state of mind, it gives you the proper bearings to begin your process of influencing minds. For more on this topic, see Page 205 of the Covert Hypnosis Operators Manual.

Q: Does the Lifestorms set use hypnosis or similar interventions? How do you help one to stop self-sabotage exactly?

KH: The Lifestorms program goes through the different life patterns that may apply to you, and tells you how to break free from the patterns that are keeping you from making progress in your life and relationships.

Q: Will you do a home study program on genius?

KH: In mid October... I will be releasing either an e-course or a cd program about How to Think like Benjamin Franklin, one of history's greatest geniuses.

Q: What is it that you really like about Las Vegas so much that you are always promoting it like a paid tourist company?

KH: I like to promote things that are fun and blow the whistle on companies with bad service...as for Las Vegas. It is simply my destination of choice in the U.S. Sitting at a blackjack table is like playing chess for money. It's about the challenge. Then there is the connection of meeting with players from all over the world and I might say some of the brightest business people I've met in my life. Many of the shows in Las Vegas are the finest in the world. Las Vegas is also a town of the politically incorrect. You don't have to be on edge every second of the day. You can simply be yourself and have fun with people like we did 25 years ago. Vegas is also a beautiful people city (at least in some parts). It's a people watcher's delight. Finally, the people (tourists and locals) in Las Vegas are some of the friendliest and most fun people in the world. I'll be in Vegas three of the next four months if you want to stop at the two-deck table at the Paris and say hello...

Q: You seem to contradict yourself. You say that people who have too many choices will not buy because of confusion yet you have 100 programs for sale. What gives?

KH: Your memory is excellent. Do remember from the Science of Influence CDs that individuals who are experts in their field are not as affected by having more choices.

Q: How could I get people to do things which they do not want to do?

KH: You must reframe something to get people to do something they don't want to do. My task for you is to write down 10 ethical uses for this technology. (Getting kids to do their homework is one. Getting poor employees to get away from internet games is another. Getting someone to break a drug addiction is another and so on.)

Q: Isn't it true that NLP has no scientific basis whatsover and it's tenants such as modalities have been proved to be untrue?

KH: Eye accessing cues are not as was purpoted in the 1970's even with "calibration." Much of NLP is very useful although you are correct that the presuppositions of NLP leave a lot to be desired from a theoretical and philosophical standpoint. I teach an NLP course every few years because there is enough there that is remarkably useful. But you are right to question the presuppositions, the eye accessing cues and even the value of submodality shifting for long term return on investment.

Q: Is it true that any guy can really pick up any girl? ?

KH: Research doesn't bare this out. Women filter out (sometimes successfully) men who are unlikely to meet their greatest needs. (Financial security, fidelity, kindness to her and children, emotional security, personal mastery, physical appearance, status in their field) Most women unconsciously assign a value (in an emotional way) to each man they see. Their formula is quite complicated when compared with the man's. Usually a woman will not go far below what she values her self at. (If she believes herself to be an 8 she won't likely go out with you if you are a 5) On the other hand, most men don't even try to attract the finest woman they can. They tend to date someone nearby or at the job. Two lousy criteria for what might be a lifetime relationship. If men were as complex as women, we'd all probably have better relationships...

Q: How do you get on the hypnotherapy directory?

KH: Only individuals who have taken a certification course of some kind can get in the directory. There are no exceptions.

Q: Is Centerpointe using your technology and calling it something else?

KH: I don't think so but I will watch carefully. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Q: Can hypnosis help lung cancer?

KH: It can but that it can doesn't mean that it will. Beating lung cancer can be done but I will not paint a rosey picture. Reducing stress can help slow the growth of some tumors. Visualization could help reduce the growth of some tumors. Getting weight under control could reduce the growth of some tumors. Hypnosis can be used for making the likelihood of successful surgery increase. Hypnosis can help in the post surgical and chemo process to reduce side effects of medications. Anyone who claims that they can cure lung cancer is a fraud. But, there is hope.

Q: Would you do a CD on how to trigger laughter using humour and communication principles, in people, during conversation?

KH: What a fabulous idea. Yes, I will do this in early 2004.

Q: Is Kevin Hogan having a Hypnosis Certification Training (any time during the year) in New York City? If so please reply I would be very interested in attending.

KH: I wish that I could but I can't. It's illegal to simply teach a certification training. An instructor must be licensed as part of a school by the state or the paper that you receive in the form of a certificate is not worth the paper it is printed on. I do not have a school in NY. I love N.Y. but I'm not licensed there. You can come to Minnesota this month or Washington or Minnesota next May. There are very few licensed schools so buyer beware.

Q: Can you tell me about the unconscious mind and how to utilize information about its behavior in selling? Where do I learn more?

KH: We all have a conscious mind and an unconscious mind. It's an amazing thing in human beings. Even with hypnosis, you can't really have a two-way communication with the unconscious mind in any effective and reliable fashion. But you CAN communicate with the conscious mind. Even more interesting is that the conscious and unconscious minds appear to have significantly different personality characteristics, attitudes, and motivations. Sound intriguing? I cover this type of material in great detail in the Science of Influence Home Study Program Vol. 13-18. This portion of the program deals with Delta Mind Control Paradigm, and utilizing Meta-programs for persuasive impact. This would be a great place to learn about the brain and how the unconscious portion of it responds to persuasion!

Q: Have you heard of the "human lie detector"? Is this possible?

KH: I have heard of the man who claims to be a human lie detector. He has simply learned what body language signals tend to reveal lying behavior. Research has proven that when a person is lying, their nose tends to swell, and they therefore unconsciously rub or swipe at it. There are many different signals to watch for. I reveal many of these secrets in my Body Language: The Secret Code program.

Q: Is a medical intuitive safe to consult? Will he/she do more harm than help heal?

KH: A medical intuitive should not be consulted. An intuitive cannot diagnose as effectively as scientific instrumentation. All people's thoughts are subject to their own personal and very subjective experience. Even if someone could intuit someone's medical problems, those intuitions would vary from intuitive to intuitive. There is no crystal ball. Sometimes, the intuitive will do much more harm than help.

Q: I know I should be doing certain things to look out for my financial future, but I keep putting them off, saying I'll get to it, but I never do. Why is that? What can I do about it?

KH: It's called inertia and it affects the best of us. There's not a person on earth who hasn't experienced this. I deal with this self-sabotaging behavior in the new series, Psychology of Wealth Accumulation.

Q: I have a client who is tough to pin down. I try and "close" him each time I talk to him, but he keeps wavering. What do I do?

KH: When the client wavers, or oscillates, it gives you an opportunity to test out some of the techniques and tips I shared with you in Science of Influence Vol. 15 - Dealing with Oscillation. You learned that your credibility is a critical issue when dealing with a person who is oscillating. You also learned that the power of your message is a critical factor. Put that CD back in the player and listen closely to catch exactly how to deal with this interesting obstacle.

Q: How does a person overcome shyness?

KH: There is new research that shows some people are born with a propensity to be shy. Carl Schwartz of Harvard Medical School and his colleagues conducted brain scans on 22 adults as they looked at pictures of familiar and unfamiliar faces.

The 13 subjects who had been shy at age 2 had more activity in a part of the brain known as the amygdala when they looked at unfamiliar faces than did the nine subjects who had been outgoing toddlers. The amygdala regulates emotions, including, most prominently, fear.

The finds support the hypothesis that some brain properties relating to temperament are preserved from infancy into early adulthood.

The researchers noted that many of the subjects who appeared to have been born shy were able to overcome that part of their temperaments as adults, even though their brains retained the tendency to react negatively to new faces.

Extreme shyness can lead to serious psychiatric disorders, such as social phobias or depression. Identifying the biological basis for shyness could lead to new and better treatments.

Understanding these developmental risk factors can help in intervening in the lives of children early on, and prevent suffering later in their lives.

Q: Certain things keep happening over and over in my life (I choose men who are bad for me) Could there be a reason why? How do I find out?

KH: There are 12 specific life patterns (or maladaptive mind states) that can lead to problems in relationships, work life, and in general. You can learn about these "schemas" in the 3 CD program in our store called Lifestorms. This program comes with a manual that describes the characteristic traits of each schema, and how to determine if they apply to you.

Q: You have so many new programs, do you have a service where you can automatically send me the newest programs as they are released?

KH: Certainly. Contact our administrative office at meta@ix.netcom.com. They will set that up for you.

Q: Can hypnosis help migraines?

KH: Hypnosis has been shown to be effective in certain cases. You should have a thorough medical exam before getting a referall from your medical doctor for a trained hypnotherapist.

Q: What other publications will you be appearing in?

KH: I was recently interviewed for an article in Woman's World magazine, which should be on the stands now! And the June 2003 issue of Cosmopolitan has a very nice spread on body language. Playboy recently interviewed me about Superbowl coach John Gruden - and his body language. Check them out!

Q: Is hypnosis effective for dissociative identity disorder?

KH: Hypnotherapy can be helpful with DID. The best book on the process is Healing the Divided Self. If you are therapist I suggest not working with DID unless you have an extensive background in psychology. If you are suffering from DID I suggest you seek out a licensed hypnotherapist or contact me for a personal referral.

Q: What is the most important characteristic in a person?

KH: Compassion

Q: Who and what do YOU read?

KH: I buy about 300 titles per year. I read every new edition textbook about Social Psychology, Influence, Psychology, and Persuasion. I also read every book that I can handle about consciousness. My favorite recent titles are "Intuition," by Myers and "Strangers Unto Ourselves" by Wilson. I read everything about human behavior that has a bibliography. I loved, "How Customers Think" by Zaltman. Best marketing book I've ever read. I rarely read pop psychology/self improvement garbage and definitely don't if there is no bibliography. A book without a bibliography is fiction. My favorite fiction include Grisham, Clancy, Dan Brown, and anything that makes great airplane reading. My favorite magazines are those that interview me like Maxim and Cosmopolitan. If I'm not in it, I like Fast Company, Skeptical Inquirer, Skeptic, The Economist, Harvard Business Review and Scientific American. Wired is good.

Q: How do you meet all those beautiful models in Vegas?

KH: Go where models go and say, "Hi I'm Kevin Hogan." Note: If you say you are Kevin Hogan tip well and order good wine.

Q: What's the most important part of making a sale?

KH: Ask questions. Without a question there is no relationship. Without a relationship there is not likely to be a sale...and definitely no long term connection.

Q: What is your opinion of the future of Iraq?

KH: Short term: A mess. Today there is no civil government, no emergency services, no agreed upon monetary exchange, etc. It will take months to develop a police force, fire departments, "agreed upon realities of law and order." The military obviously isn't designed to be a police force. (They receive no police training.) The faster civil order is established the better. And it will take time. Long term: The US/UK administrations are set on this country being a success case. What once appeared to be an impotent U.S. President has shown remarkable determination to fulfill his vision. I imagine they will be a fairly wealthy nation with their oil producing and exporting ability. In 10 years they could be one of the better Arab nations to live in as far as GDP and per capita income. Iraqi's seem like wonderful people as you watch them interiviewed. They have suffered so long. They deserve freedom as much as anyone.

Q: Why are men such jerks?

KH: It is a fundamental defect that we all are destined to fight. Forgive those of us who fight the hardest. Some of us try very hard.

Q: What's the fastest way to get a woman to have sex?

KH: Ask.

Q: Of all of your programs, which one would you strongly suggest to help a person install sustained motivation to achieve their worthwhile goals more easily?

KH: Combine three CD Sets and I guarantee nowhere will you find a better road map...anywhere:

  1. The Abundant Mind
  2. Goal Setting System That Works
  3. Attraction Principle

Q: I am a mediator dealing with people who may bring their case based on "principle" which is difficult to deal with in mediation. Tell me your resources to help a party "get off of" his principle so that mediation would be possible?

KH: Principle is often a euphemism for being stubborn. The law of consistency suggests that if one publicly states a position they are unlikely to contradict themselves in public (public being in front of one or more people) no matter how reasonable or unreasonable. Therefore it's always best to keep people's positions and points of view silent and have them address "concerns" and "possible problems" instead.

Q: My question is...Do you offer home study certifications in Hypnotherapy or NLP?

KH: There are exceptions to every rule but in general the answer is almost never for hypnotherapy and rarely for NLP. NLP is not a therapeutic vocation therefore there is no law governing this area. NLP is also a broad anacronym for a wide range of tools and techniques that vary from astonishing to useless. in the case of hypnotherapy we do not offer certifications within the United States by home study because it is not legal in most cases. Hypnotherapy is a vocation and certifications can only be offered by licensed schools. From an ethics standpoint we wonder how we can promote the concept of putting actual "therapists" on the street without working with clients in a supervised setting first. Finally, for people who are certified in hypnotherapy or NLP we do offer advanced certifications by home study upon proof of competency.

Q: Where can I find psychological journals dealing specifically with hypnosis?

KH: In the USA there is the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and also the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. Both are quite good.

Q: What is the most powerful Law of Persuasion, in your opinion?

KH: The most powerful thing you can do in persuasion is to combine the knowledge that you possess about all the laws and include all that you can in your persuasive message. But that's not your question. If I had to pick the one most powerful, it would be The Law of Time! Changing someone's time perspective helps them to make different decisions. When people change their time perspective they change how they feel about something and the decisions they make in regard to it. Read more about the Laws of Persuasion in Psychology of Persuasion and The Science of Influence CD Set.

Q: A reader from Ohio writes: I am in sales and would like to start taking advantage of your products, but I don't know where to start. What do you suggest?

KH: Best: Purchase the Science of Influence Set which includes Volumes 1-12 in the series. It is the best value for your money, and includes so many of the principles and techniques that are going to benefit you in your business, AND in your relationships. Look through the titles of Volumes 11-17 and find the ones you believe will apply to your selling situation. The dvd, Selling Yourself to Others (Part of Secrets of Sales Success Program) is excellent quality and a quick way to gain insights and tips that you can put to use tomorrow!

Q: LeAnn J. writes: The photo on your website with you and Melinda...what's it mean when the heads are touching and tilted toward each other vs. separate and not touching?

KH: Melinda does a lot of publicity so, you can only assume that she is comfortable with people in general. If you click to the next page and see Vanna, you will see that she is VERY comfortable with me. I had asked her what her real name was right before that shot was snapped. (Michelle) She came out of her Vegas Showgirl mode immediately and melted like butter for a quick moment before returning to stage persona. That's why that picture looks like we know each other. Generally the more physical contact the more liking. The more tilting toward, the more liking. The more eye contact, the more liking.

Q: Terry C. writes: How do I motivate myself to produce material like you do?

KH: Develop OCD for something productive. I'm only half kidding. The real answer is to actually start on projects and make them priority one tasks every day and continue and continue until it's like eating breakfast and driving your car. The brain will lay down the new behaviors in the brain as part of your daily routine fast enough. Can I suggest listening to The Attraction Principle for further assistance??

Q: Linsey D. writes: How do you become an expert in body language?

KH: Be accurate when you get in print and in the media. I got it right on Clinton/Lewinsky before anyone else did. I got Hilary right on the Today Show with Matt Lauer. I got Kathleen Willey, Ken Starr and all of them right. Could have been chance or skill but either way, when it came to the 2000 elections the BBC called for the Gore and Bush debates. they called me. Since then, everyone wants my take which will probably continue until I blow a big one. Til then we ride the wave. For you, observe human behavior in every context, take nonverbal communication classes at your University, do your own research, spend a hundred dollars on my Body Language CD/manual which has research you can do and the most important information you'll find anywhere distilled for you.

Q: William T. writes: What is the real secret to success?

KH: Here's the formula: Integrity x Motivation x Filling other people's needs and meeting their desires x Being the Best

Q: Roger L. writes: Bob Brenner says he gets great results with stuttering? Is this true? What do you know about Omni Hypnosis?

KH: If Bob says he gets great results with stuttering, I have no reason to disbelieve him. Omni Hypnosis is a respected facility in Florida whose principal is Jerry Kein. About two dozen of my students originally trained there and most report a favorable experience with Jerry. Some stuttering problems can be helped with hypnotherapy. Some cannot.

Q: Maude H. writes: How do I introduce myself in writing or when giving a presentation?

KH: Write down all of your achievements first. Everything important. Take the top five that are truly impressive. Then rotate your name with pronouns. So, an intro for speaking or a magazine interview might be: "Kevin Hogan, Psy.D., is the author of 10 books including Psychology of Persuasion and amazon.com best selling Irresistible Attraction. He has spoken before more than a quarter million people around the globe on subjects as diverse as body language and selling skills. Kevin recently presented to the Ministry of Health in Poland about the prevention of the spread of AIDS. He is a recognized expert in body language, influence and hypnosis."

Then stop. You can rotate your achievements to see what draws the best response from audiences and readers. Don't bore people and use credentials that anyone can obtain.

Q: Richard T. writes: Where did the NLP idea of submodalities originate?

KH: I don't know but I suspect from Bandler watching television. Many if not most of the submodalities are control knobs on old televisions from the 60's.

Q: Kristen P. writes: Why should I train with the Minnesota Institute of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy instead of ___?

KH: Because when you ask around and find out people's experience you discover that excellence stands out. Don't take one person's opinion. Get 100 and then make your choices. Training is remarkably inexpensive nowadays so, even if you choose wrong you can make another choice later. There are some fine instructors in the field but few licensed, legitimate schools. Perhaps 30 in the country?

Q: Donna E. writes: What's something tactful to say when a male client asks a female therapist out on a date?

KH: Directness works best. "I'd have to go to jail immediately after the date as it is a felony in many states and a sexual misconduct misdemeanor in others."

Q: Nicole W. writes: How exactly is hypnosis connected to psychology?

KH: Hypnosis and psychology had parallel growth periods and have influenced each other for three hundred years. Hypnosis originally started as much more magical (Mesmerism) than scientific. Now hypnotherapy has been rigidly tested and we know what works and what is snake oil. Psychology went through a ping pong game like (psychodynamic, then behaviorism, cognitive behavioral, evolutionary psychology) growth. Now that both fields have stabilized we know that both hypnotherapy and psychotherapy are remarkably similar, work for essentially the same reasons and don't work for pretty much the same reasons.

Q: Lyndon G writes: Mental Rehearsal. Should it be done associated or dissociated?

KH: Always associated.

Q: "Why Do Men Cheat?"

A. In a recent Coffee With Kevin Hogan e-zine, we talked about why and when women have extramarital affairs. (Women tend to have affairs when they are ovulating.) In the last issue we discussed why members of both sexes tell lies. (It would seem women have an edge in the virtue department here because although women and men lie 2-3 times for every 10 minutes of conversation....men tend to tell lies to make themselves look better while women tell lies to make others feel better. Interesting.) So, here we are with the question, why do men cheat? Who specifically and when?

Very little is as interesting to us humans as to why we lie and cheat and how we know if someone is cheating us or lying to us. Recent research shows that there are plenty of cheaters and chumps (Scientific American this month) in the world and that most of us will spend a significant portion of our lives avoiding being cheated and then punishing those that cheat us. Interestingly, people tend to punish cheaters with far more retribution than the cheater "took" from us...even if it costs the one cheated a great deal of time and money. We all hate to be taken advantage of...in any fashion... and the more we are cheated the more skeptical and cynical we typically become.

As much as women are biologically programmed to build a nest, fill it and tend it until the woman's offspring can fly the coop, men are wired in a completely different fashion for the survival of the species Men are genetically wired to spread as much "seed" as is possible. Women are limited to the number of children they can mother. Men however are virtually unlimited as to the number of children they can father. From a natural (evolutionary) standpoint, the formula is ideal for the survival of the species. Highly motivated males impregnate as many possible females with the genetic message to produce and protect as many offspring as is possible written write into your DNA. Mother nature truly is an interesting character...and she generates some interesting problems with men's short term mating strategies.

Symons (1979) showed us clearly that men have need for "variety" and many men have powerful sexual drives that virtually compel them to impregnate as many women as possible. Many men's genetic make up is similar to the likes of King Solomon (1000+ wives) from the Bible. David Buss (1993), one of the world's leading psychologists interviewed hundreds of men and women and discovered that in the next year (from the date of the survey), men on average desired 6+ partners. Women? One. Men's innate desire for sexual activity is significantly greater than that of women's. How much so?

Buss discovered that men are very comfortable and likely to say they will have sex with an attractive woman that they have known for less than one week. Women on the other hand, offer virtually no hope for the male in having sex with men in less than one week. What percentage of marrieds are likely to have sex with someone outside of marriage? The numbers are fuzzy. No two studies seem to replicate the others but one fact is clear. Men have sex outside of marriage than do married women. Perhaps as many as 25% of men and 15% of women. As incomes climb for the men, the likelihood of extramarital affairs climbs. As physical attractiveness of the man climbs so does his likelihood of having affairs. Specifically, those men with symmetrical features are far more likely to have extramarital affairs than men with asymmetrical features.

Does self esteem matter? We already know that women low in self esteem are far more likely to have affairs than women with high self esteem. There is no correlation, however, between self esteem and extramarital mating among men. Low self esteem is the greatest predictor of women's likelihood for extramarital affairs. The greatest predictors for men are opportunity, income and symmetrical features.

Even with all this information we haven't answered "why?" The answer is really quite simple. Any male (of virtually any species on earth) can enjoy the pleasures of sexual relations with a female and then go on immediately about his business. However, the female could very easily become impregnated and have a long term problem on her hands long after the male has moved along. Therefore the biology of "why" is simple. Males have the capacity, the drive and the ability to walk away. It's written in the genes to do just this. There is no genetic or natural benefit for the male to impregnate a female then stop impregnating other females. To do so runs counter to the biological programs that populate the planet. Meanwhile, the female to her benefit or harm will tend the nest and raise the young.

To learn how mating strategies relate to physical attraction, building relationships and being more attractive to the opposite sex you probably would enjoy my video, Irresistible Attraction: Secrets of Personal Magnetism.

Q: "What is your opinion about telepathic hypnosis? (The New Mental Battlefield)?"

A. There is no evidence to support it but it should be studied at length.

Q: "Are writers and creative people using hypnosis to enhance their creativity? "

A. Some do and some can successfully. There are studies that show high correlations between individuals who are creative and innovative in nature with depression, often manic depression. These problems are often beneficial to the creative output but difficult in other areas of life. Hypnosis (in this case, guided imagery, future vision, mental imaging technology) is useful in writing and creativity for numerous reasons which will be the subject of an article and not an answer to a question here!

Q: "How much of the mind/body connection is regulated by our inner rules and perceptions of the world and ourselves? "

A. Sometimes our stress levels can greatly alter our health. So can our beliefs about what we should or should not be feeling at any given moment. I'd like to direct you to the Mind Body Therapist Home Study Course because for 8 solid hours I detail what is and is not related in the Mind/Body connection. I think anyone would find this incredibly useful, life enhancing and life lengthening!

Q: "Are there limits beyond which someone can not be influenced?"

A. There are some people who cannot be influenced beyond certain limits but they are in the minority. History and research shows that people can be influenced to do almost anything, good or bad.

Q: "What is your opinion about the role of the unconscious mind in the mechanism of hypnosis in general and particularly in the one of post hypnotic suggestion?"

A. Sometimes post hypnotic suggestion is completely impotent. No chance it will work. Other times, with other priming by the individual it can be very very powerful. It isn't the unconscious so much that makes post hypnotic suggestion effective it is the frame in which the individual paints for the subject that shapes the direction of his behavior.

Q: "What is your opinion of the best schools for hypnosis?"

Q. In England, you could train with Terry Watts or Shaun Brookhouse. Different styles....good people. In the USA you could train with the Minnesota Institute of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy. We are a licensed school...one of the very few in the United States. We also hire the best trainers for our certification trainings. In Ireland, Joe Keaney. There are several across the world who are quite good at their own approach to hypnosis, hypnotherapy, and complementary medicine in general.

Q: "What is the connection, if any, of our relationship with our parents to our physical and mental health?"

A: This issue speaks to the mind body connection. The power of connection is the first key to healing and wellness. The Harvard Mastery of Stress Study (1952-1987) randomly selected 126 men to describe how they felt about their parents. (4. Very Close; 3. Warm and Friendly; 2. Tolerant; 1. Strained and Cold). 91% who said they did NOT have a warm relationship with their parents were 35 years later found to have been diagnosed with serious diseases like coronary artery disease, alcoholism, duodenal ulcer, etc. vs. only 45% of those who DID have a warm relationship with their mother. (82-50 for fathers) These findings are additive: ALL who indicated both were less than warm had been diagnosed with severe illness in mid life. Powerful stuff.

Q: "How do I read a woman's body language?"

A: Quite well thank you, and I do it very carefully! :-) There are articles on the front page of the website that will start you in the right direction. See Can You Hear Your Body Talk? and Non-Verbal Communication: The Basics. In the catalog you will find two programs that are worth having. See Body Language: Get The Edge CD Set and Body Language: Get the Edge Video.

Q: "What do you think of Robert Cialdini and his book Influence?"

A: I think it's fabulous. Cialdini is a leader in the field of social psychology and should be recognized as such.

Q: "Can I be hypnotized to have more self confidence?"

A: Yes and no. You can be hypnotized to have greater self confidence but really you need to create new patterns of thought in your brain's wiring to create long term change. That won't happen in one session of hypnosis. See the article Unshakable Self-Confidence. It's free.

Q: "When is the optimal time for eliciting someone's values/metaprograms to insure I get accurate information?"

A: When you are in rapport with the person and there is mutual disclosure of deeper issues that are important to both people.

Q: "I've come across sites selling Delta, Theta brainwave music. Do you believe by listening to this music that the brain can be lulled to follow the sounds into the various states of consciousness? Can this be used during hypnotic inductions and deepening techniques?"

A: I don't like the word "states" as it is used in this question. Delta, Theta, Alpha waves are objective bands of activity but they don't indicate specific behaviors for the individual. So, the music probably could be helpful in meeting specific objectives like sleep, rest, relaxation, learning, etc. and it could probably be tested to find what kinds of music elicit best results for each of these. Many studies are possible. I can imagine testing the immune response with music that purports to help immunity. Such experiments wouldn't be that expensive and would be very interesting indeed.

Q: "I was reading a book about hypnotic language patterns. Can you really use hypnotic language to get people into a trance?"

A: Probably not in the way you are thinking. There are a few patterns of Milton Erickson's that I've tested (I've tested a lot and a few come out "positive.") and seem to be generally effective in the English language. However, using hypnotic language in general is over-rated. That said, there are some gems as far as stimulus-response triggers in English speaking countries. See Covert Hypnosis Manual and Psychology of Persuasion for more information on hypnotic language patterns that work.

Q: "Is it possible to obtain the questions used when doing the research on NLP Eye Accessing Cues: Uncovering the Myth?"

Q: "When should you do Self-Hypnosis?"

A recent discovery in the field of hypnosis is that almost every human needs about a 20 minute break every 90 minutes after working or being active (see "The 20-Minute Break" by Rossi). These cycles appear to happen across all cultures and are evident in men, women, and children.

If you are reading a book, you will know when you come to this period of your cycle because your eyes will get "fuzzy" and "gloss over". If you have to re-read a sentence, or even a whole paragraph, then you have read into a break time.

So how do you know when to start playing that self-hypnosis tape? The signals are easy to identify. When you yawn, go back and re-read that sentence, or start to get up unconsciously from what you are doing, you are ready for an ultradian break. Now is the time to put that tape in the cassette player, sit back, and enjoy a self-hypnosis session that encourages calm, quiet, and restfulness.

For more on self-hypnosis, see Through the Open Door.

Q: "Are there specific behaviors or fundamental differences to look for in a potential mate? In other words, what are the most likely things that may destroy a potential relationship?"

We need to be aware of lifestyle differences that, down the road, may become obstacles to happiness. Here are a few of them:

  • Neatness vs. sloppy
  • Financial stability: how do they handle their checkbook(s)
  • Spending habits: too frugal, out of control?
  • Intelligence: are you at similar levels, or is there a disparity?
  • Social status
  • Introvert vs. extrovert
  • Giver vs. taker
For a more detailed look at this topic, see the book Irresistible Attraction

Q: "Which of the 16 basic desires that you write about in Covert Hypnosis are most important in influencing the behavior of others? "

This entirely depends upon the situation you find yourself in. Certainly the desires to collect and eat are critical to survival. Our desire to have sex and reproduce (related but slightly different) is probably the most essential for survival of the species and therefore critical in persuasion. The desire of curiosity or the need to learn, if you will, is essential to the satisfaction of the brain. Finally, the desire of tranquility as it relates to the defense of the individual and the need to avoid danger and create a safe environment for the self, mate and offspring are critical in the persuasion process. There is no easy answer to the question. Every product or service plugs into (or doesn't) different desires and drives. Covert Hypnosis is about influencing the mind to plug into these core desires. Therefore the answer is that it is different from situation to situation.

Q: "How do you reconcile your spiritual discussions in your book Talk Your Way to the Top with your evolutionary discussions in Covert Hypnosis?"

Spirit is something that I have an opinion about. You can't measure spirit. Therefore when I write about something like a holographic universe, multiverses, the interconnectedness of the universe...I am speculating. These "things" represent a personal ideology or evolving thought process. These are not "true things" or "real things." Just like I can't prove (or disprove) the ascension of Mohammed or Jesus, or the presence of God in the temple, I can't prove any personal beliefs about spirit. These ideas or beliefs are interesting but they don't help you accomplish or achieve. They do provide a framework to "make sense" of what we are doing here, which almost everyone experiences.

On the other hand, most of what we know about genetics and instinctual drives, is factual. We know a great deal about how we have evolved (though much is to be learned) and we can make predictions about behavior from what we have learned to validate the theories. Therefore, my speculation about spirit and universe in Talk Your Way to the Top shouldn't be taken as factual, for it is just an opinion that is evolving into a hypothesis. In Covert Hypnosis, I deal with facts that are measurable and they can be weighed and held up to greater scrutiny.

Q: "What is mind to mind healing and how does it work?"

We tested the proposal of mind to mind healing during two research projects at the Institute of Hypnosis certification trainings. The proposal is that in extremely "deep trance" one might be able to "psychically heal another." We were unable to verify illnesses healed though one individual said he improved from sinus problems in the 24 hours following the experiment. Disciples of the developers of the idea of mind to mind healing noted we probably didn't do the procedure as it needed to be done. That certainly is possible though I doubt any nuances would have changed the results of our research.

Q: "Is it possible to address multiple issues (weight, procrastination, confidence, prosperity) simultaneously with hypnosis?"

The word possible is well noted here and therefore I answer "yes." However, weight issues are fighting your genes which have been programmed to collect extra weight for long term survival purposes (unfortunately evolution hasn't caught up with western economies of abundance). Prosperity comes from the genetic drive to acquire. The drive to "acquire" is at the root of both prosperity and being overweight however, culturally we have changed to being thinner and for the most part, taught to overcome the urge to collect those things that will give us plenty. It is a complex mess that society has helped nurture and I suggest that people address one issue at a time with a therapist or coach.

Q: "How can I get to the Sichort State from the Esdaile State? "

The question presupposes that these states are "real" and measurably different from each other. Our ongoing research now, at three years, shows that these two states are not objectively measurable and the instructions given to one person yield different behaviors and external phenomenon than another person will experience. Then, later, upon debriefing, all individuals have memory for the supposed states, which would be not expected as these states are supposedly deeper than somnambulism which is supposedly marked by amnesia (another point that rarely is shown to be true in reality). Therefore, it would be inappropriate of me to mislead you into believing that a specific set of instructions will move a general group of individuals into various states where observed behaviors are similar to each other, when indeed that is not the case.

Q: "You recently said in a seminar that a lot of NLP is BS and a lot of NLP is life changing. What is what and how do you know? Why do you offer certifications if you think a lot of it is BS?"

For the same reason mathematics has evolved beyond addition and astronomy beyond astrology, NLP as it evolves scientifically is useful. Specifically, we no longer tell people the earth is flat...it became round. We certify people after acquiring knowledge and skill in learning and applying the areas that we know are useful.

Every discipline evolves or it dies.

Let's answer the second part first. The way you "know," is you test. You test for yourself (somewhat important) and you test for larger groups (very important). Some stuff in NLP holds up very well to testing. Some stuff doesn't.

The NLP patterns that are rehearsed over and over that help create new neurological patterns in the brain that help the individual move toward something new are very useful. (New Behavior Generator, Circle of Excellence, Swish, etc.) The eye accessing cues and "calibration" of same are simply not accurate. The meta model provides some value for comprehending individuals intentions. It is a plodding model of communication and therefore not ideal for the search of deep structure (which can be useful or destructive.)

The milton model can be useful in trance but impotent in other communication areas it has been recommended for. Pacing and leading turn out to be VERY useful in real life and actually do help build rapport, even better than we once thought. Reframing is a wonderful tool. The presuppositions of NLP are often not only inaccurate they can often be harmful. The well formed outcome is a wonderful way to get people to consider their future experiences and anchoring is very useful. Some hypnotic language has shown to be very useful some is a waste of breath. Overall, there is a lot to keep and a lot to throw. The way you can personally determine what you learn is useful or not is to test everything you learn with 20-30 people and find out what you learn to be useful.

Q: "What is the difference between coaching, mentoring, and therapy? Where can I become a certified mentor or certified coach?"

A mentor is someone who has done what you want to do and they help you do the same thing. For example: You want to learn how to be a baseball player and Mark McGwire decides to help you. You want to be a model and Tyra Banks (or Heidi Klum perhaps?) agrees to help you. You want to be a singer and Garth Brooks says, "OK, here's what you do..." and then he keeps on you to make sure you really do what you say you want to do. Usually people mentor others at no cost but there are definite exceptions. There are no certified mentoring programs that I am aware of.

I am a director of the licensed program called The International Institute of Coaching which certifies individuals who want to be professional coaches. Coaching is the art and science of motivating and inspiring people to achieve their goals and reach their outcomes. Coaching is almost always a person to person contract where one person agrees to coach another for a fee. Coaching is the fastest growing profession in the United States and the United Kingdom. Coaches don't necessarily have to have succeeded in the profession they are coaching in. Some of the best coaches in the world are experts at helping others reach their goals and achieve their dreams. (If being a certified coach is something you want more information about, e-mail me at kevin@kevinhogan.com and we will send you a brochure for our next training.)

Therapy is useful in helping people overcome problems, disorders, sicknesses and diseases. Therapists are usually paid for their work. Therapists tend to work one on with individuals though some coaches work with groups, and do so successfully.

Q: "Are your books translated into Spanish?"

Only the Psychology of Persuasion is available in Spain. It is also available in Portuguese. POP is available in about nine different languages. Talk Your Way to the Top is available in a few different languages and so is Through the Open Door, but so far that is it! If you know a publisher that wants to purchase rights for these three books, they should contact Pelican Publishing in Gretna, Louisiana. If they want to buy rights to Irresistible Attraction, The New Hypnotherapy Handbook, or some of the other books I've written, they should contact Network 3000 Publishing in Eagan, MN (612) 616-0732.

Q: "How can I use your mathematical learning methods for Calculus?"

I hated calculus. I was busy avoiding class at all costs and I'm afraid I'm a lousy mentor on this one. I would suggest you listen to music that relaxes the mind, as calculus can be pretty challenging stuff. Classical music (sorry) is probably your best option.
